Even very experienced buyers have trouble knowing whether a melon will be juicy, ripe and flavorful. There is no guarantee of success, but a few hints will help. In cantaloupes, look for thick, coarse netting (or veining) that is raised up above the surface of the melon. The skin between the netting should have changed from green to a yellowish color. (However, a very yellow, soft rind - the skin - may mean over ripeness.) when ripe, the cantaloupes (melon) will have a pleasant cantaloupe smell when held close to the nose. It will feel a little soft to the thumb at the blossom end (opposite the dimpled end where the stem fell off). Small bruises won’t hurt, but avoid large damaged areas or mold.
