Do you ever get the feeling late in the morning that someone has “pulled out the plug” on your power supply - that you’ve got no energy left? Or that you’re so nervous and jumpy that you’re ready to “blow a fuse” ?

Difficult situations often make people tired and nervous. And you can’t spend your life trying to avoid these situations. But you can make sure that you are prepared for them in every way possible. Your body needs to be prepared, as well as your mind. For instance you need to have enough rest. How much sleep do you usually get?

You can’t expect to be clear-headed and alert if you’re fighting off sleepiness. To make matters worse, the effort of trying to wake up and to concentrate makes you all the more tired and nervous. Studying is important, but you can’t do it all in one night. It’s better to get your studying done ahead of time. Then you can get some sleep the night before and go into your test well rested.

It’s also important to go into your test (or any important event) well nourished. What did you have for breakfast this morning ?

Mental efforts does take energy. Your brain never stops working even while you’re asleep. Other body functions keep working, too. Your heart keeps beating, your lungs keep breathing. Your stomach, kidneys, and other organs keep doing their work. These various activities are needed to support life, even when you are resting. They use up more than half of the fuel you consume each day, if you are an average person. That’s one reason why a good breakfast really counts.
