Fiber - Think what it would be like to live in a house where you couldn’t take out the garbage. It would just keep piling up in one room after another. Or imagine a city that had no wind to blow away the air pollution. It would just keep getting thicker and thicker. Well, your body has “pollution” too - from its many chemical activities, from the by-products of infections, and so forth. Some of these wastes would be very poisonous if they were allowed to build up in the body. They are cleaned out of the blood by the kidneys and liver. Some of them are dumped into the intestines, where they are moved out of the body along with the indigestible fiber you ate. If you don’t have enough of this fiber, the elimination process takes longer, and poisonous wastes remain in your body longer.

Fiber not only makes the elimination process quicker, but makes it easier. Fiber holds water, which keeps the waste products from getting hard and difficult for the body to pass. So the overall result is: fiber helps your body keep itself healthy, and it helps you keep feeling good, too.

Don’t most foods have fiber in them?

Most plant foods have at least some fiber. But many of the foods we eat today are highly refined. The fiber is taken out. As a result, many people don’t get enough natural fiber in their diets. That’s why it’s especially important to eat enough fruits and vegetables and whole grain products.
