What is
Chikungunya ?
Chikungunya
is a viral infection caused by an arbovirus (Alphavirus of the
family Togaviridae).
How does
it spread ?
Through Aedes
mosquitoes (which also spread dengue fever)
Recognize
the symptoms
1. Sudden
high fever
2. Rashes
3. Severe or
chronic join pain (may last for more than three months) in mainly
wrists, ankles and fingers/toes.
4. Headache
The symptoms
are most often clinically indistinguishable from those observed in
dengue fever.
Chikungunya in Malaysia
Six states
have been hit by Chikungunya in Malaysia as at Sept 6, 2008: Johor,
Pahang, Kelantan, Malacca (Melaka), Negeri Sembilan and Perak. However,
so far no fatalities associated with Chikungunya have been reported.
Minimize
your chances of getting infected with Chikungunya
1. Clean your
house and surrounding neighborhood.
2. Make sure
there are no potential mosquito-breeding sites. Inspect your house or
surroundings once a week for such sites.
3. Avoid
getting bitten by mosquitoes.
4. Use insect
repellents or mosquito coils or repellent mats.
Do you

If you have
symptoms of Chikungunya, seek medical help promptly at your nearest
clinic or hospital.
Alternatively, you can do a Chikungunya blood test at your nearest
diagnostic centre to rule out any possibilities!
