Method :
Combine the
onion, garlic, ginger, red chili powder, ground turmeric and ground
coriander in a blender or food processor. Add a little of the coconut
milk and blend to a paste (use as little coconut milk as possible). Heat
the vegetable oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat. Add the cloves
and cinnamon. Reduce the heat and add the paste. Sauté for 1-2 minutes,
then add the beef and salt. Cook, stirring until the meat is sealed on
all sides. Add the coconut milk and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat
to low and simmer for 20-25 minutes, until the beef is tender. Add the
tamarind water and sugar. Check the seasoning and adjust with a little
tamarind or sugar if necessary. Serve immediately.
A very famous
beef dish from Sumatra. The finished meal is dark red in color, with a
rich and spicy flavor imparted by the blend of coconut milk and spices.
It is usually served with rice and a side dish or two of vegetables.
