Malaysia is about 65% self-sufficient in
rice. The rest is imported, especially high quality, fragrant rice.
Although per capita consumption has fallen from 110 to 93 kg over the
past to decades, rice is still the staple food in this country.
Topography plays a role in overall rice
production. The four main rice environments are irrigated, partially
irrigated, rainfed lowland and upland. Ricefields in Peninsular Malaysia
are predominantly irrigate low-land. In Sabah and Sarawak, rainfed and
upland rice are more important. Acute labor shortage has been alleviated
by farm mechanization.
The rice research division in the Malaysia
Argicultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) is looking at
efficient management practices, production systems, superior vice
potential.
