Method :

Fry the anchovies (ikan bilis)
until crisp and put aside.

Grind the prawn paste together with
shallots, garlic, deseeded and dried chilies.

Slice the bombay onion into rings.

Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a pan and
fry the ground ingredients until fragrant.

Add in the onion rings.

Add tamarind juice, salt and sugar.

Cook, stirring occasionally until
the gravy thickens.

Add in the anchovies and mix well.

Serve with steaming hot rice in
coconut milk.

Rice in coconut milk (nasi lemak) is a
typical Malay breakfast. Individual portions wrapped in banana leaves,
are often taken along on picnics. The typical accompaniments are fried
peanuts and sliced cucumber.
