Lentils (Dhall) Recipes

Ingredients :

lentil (dhall)

large onions, sliced

cloves garlic, chopped

piece ginger, shredded


large tomatoes, quartered


dried chilies, roughly broken into a few pieces

ghee or butter

salt to taste

Method :
  1. Clean, wash and drain the lentils (dhall).

  2. Put into a deep pan with two cups water, garlic and ginger, salt and turmeric, and simmer till lentils (dhall) is soft.

  3. In a small wok or frying pan, heat ghee or butter.

  4. When hot, add dried chilies, cumin, and when crackling, add sliced onions.

  5. Fry till onions are golden.

  6. When onions are golden, add the tomatoes, fry for a few minutes, then add the cooked lentils (dhall), and let it simmer for about 5 minutes.

  7. Serve hot with rice and vegetables and fried fish, or with vegetables and chapatis.
