Chestnut Cheese Casserole Recipes

Ingredients :

225 g dried chestnuts, soaked overnight, drained

boiling water

1 tsp salt

25 g butter or margarine

225 g Cheddar cheese, grated

2 large slices brown bread, de-crusted, turned into crumbs

Method :
  1. Put chestnuts into a pan.
  2. Add boiling water to cover then stir in salt.
  3. Bring to boil, lower heat and cover.
  4. Simmer for 3/4 to 1 hour or until chestnuts are tender.
  5. Drain.
  6. Rinse with cold water, drain again and break into small chunks.
  7. Fill a 1.25 liter greased heatproof dish with alternate layers of chestnuts and cheese.
  8. End with cheese and sprinkle with breadcrumbs.
  9. Bake 15 to 20 minutes in oven 425F, Gas 7.
  10. When ready, the mixture should be very hot and the top golden brown and crisp.
